Distracted by Blues!
Monday, April 12, 2021
Take me to your leader!
Finally! The Aliens flimsy is finished.
Not sure what the final name will be
but it turned out well.
The hints of wheel colors in the border
pull it together and the grey seems to be very unifying.
A few learning/reminders
during the finishing of this top.
first reminder~ Press press press.
The pressing on the blocks and borders
really assisted in helping achieve a flat top
second reminder~ measure the center to fit the borders.
Measuring and fitting the borders to
the top makes the quilt body nice and square.
Any additional borders go on like a
breeze if the quilt body is all squared up.
learning~all my flimsies have the edges
stay stitched. The seams open up while
marinating if they are not secured.
This time , the feed dogs were pulling on the
seam edges and they were being pulled
open and stitched down. Argh!
The solution was to stitch with the seams up
and with the body of the quilt completely in
the machine throat.
The 1/4" foot blade
pressed the seam down and the stitching
was perfect without bunching or pulling!
This was a great quilt to make and
looks nothing like the original inspiration!
Stay safe and sew on!
Update !
This is now quilted and spent a month on
the bed in celebration. Aliens almost went
out the door as a retirement gift but the
alien them appealed to inner space nut too
much and it just had to become a member of my
Cozy Collection.

To do #4
My to do list from last week

I do love blues!
It has been a busy week.
I've been trying to land those Aliens!.
I did find some time to work on
some blues and I have a lot of it.
Oh and did I add the blizzard?
And the batting pick up? And the airport run?
I am planning to catch up on all the months
of rainbow scraping by making a rainbow
row quilt with crumb strips of each monthly colour.
A visit to the block bank and I hit pay dirt!!
I even found my layout plan from March 2019 ,
along with some orange parts from a Staircase quilt.
The paper used for foundation was still attached.
The meat flyer! Look at that turkey!
A white strip complementing all the colours
should make it a success.
Blue ones are in progress so that's a good start.
I really liked the look of the horizontal quilting on
Blues for Brothers so this
will be a good repeat of that plan.
I also found this great little pattern from McCall's 2006.
It definitely has potential.
A co-worker out East is having a baby boy
in a few months so it's a perfect time
to raid the block bank and make a
blue coloured quilt for the new arrival.
Three more blue family square and the top
will be complete.
from a long ago colour wash quilt needed a purpose.
There are so many! They should work well as
a border around the colour blocks.
Here is a little mock-up! It really works!
A little border of white and then 1 ½” inch blue
strip sets followed by a saucy
blue binding really does the trick!
Off we go into the wild blue yonder!
Stay safe and sew on!

Woot woot!
Just had to share Progress!!!!
The "Aliens quilt " is finally together!
I found a big pile of greys,
and managed to dig out an assortment
for the setting triangles.
I have a friend who would love a teal blue
quilt, but I am not sure this one qualifies.
It has some blues here,
And here :
but I don't think enough for my teal addicted ladies.
The top is almost a flimsy. It still needs
the side frame borders.
It will be finished off with a piano key
border in shades of gray with the occasional
wheel color thrown in for spice!

Keep those scraps flying!
Wow! Lots of weather changes and
lots of quilting changes. Things are
ramping up for spring ! Hopefully spring
will bring new beginnings for us all!
Progress in the quilting realm too!
Accompanied by some good science fiction,
I am flying my Alien quilt toward completion!
The joining triangles will end up being varied greys.
I chose the pale grey to let the multicolored blocks shine!
Cleaning up the scrap table has turned out
two new items to add to my "ongoing progress list".

Make some room!
Some days you just have to tidy up!
Seems I was a little over enthusiastic and
got out more projects than I could do!
Workspace definitely needed a clean up and sort!
So... I assembled 4 of the "Many Strips" for the APQ sew along.
They were all laid out on my block boards and
taking up a lot of room. Somewhat defeating the purpose
of block boards! I made mine from a candy box
a kind neighbor gifted us.
Then I UFOed the Lady of the Meadow. I am
not sure if it is becoming green enough so off to
marinate it goes.
Tonight and this week I will be working on the Aliens
and getting the setting pieces in place to turn it into a flimsy.
Cobble stone alley and its variation will be in progress too.
They will really clean up the scrap piles on the work table .
So I can add in my weekly list also.
Last week I finished a few!
