Finally! The Aliens flimsy is finished.
Not sure what the final name will be
but it turned out well.
The hints of wheel colors in the border
pull it together and the grey seems to be very unifying.
A few learning/reminders
during the finishing of this top.
first reminder~ Press press press.
The pressing on the blocks and borders
really assisted in helping achieve a flat top
second reminder~ measure the center to fit the borders.
Measuring and fitting the borders to
the top makes the quilt body nice and square.
Any additional borders go on like a
breeze if the quilt body is all squared up.
learning~all my flimsies have the edges
stay stitched. The seams open up while
marinating if they are not secured.
This time , the feed dogs were pulling on the
seam edges and they were being pulled
open and stitched down. Argh!
The solution was to stitch with the seams up
and with the body of the quilt completely in
the machine throat.
The 1/4" foot blade
pressed the seam down and the stitching
was perfect without bunching or pulling!
This was a great quilt to make and
looks nothing like the original inspiration!
Stay safe and sew on!
Update !
This is now quilted and spent a month on
the bed in celebration. Aliens almost went
out the door as a retirement gift but the
alien them appealed to inner space nut too
much and it just had to become a member of my
Cozy Collection.

Nice quilt design. Congratulations.
ReplyDeleteThank you . A lot of my projects usually take different directions and end up somewhere else! Creativity or serendipity!

ReplyDeleteThank you ! I do love a piano key border!
DeleteThanks for the reminders for stitching. The blocks remind me of spaceships or time travel doors.
ReplyDeleteHmm gives a whole new meaning to UFOs! We do love our Sci fi don't we!
DeleteYou mentioned two of the mistakes I usually make... stay stitching and measuring the quilt center to cut teh borders! When(EVER!!) i can get out of this cast on my rt arm I will be taking off the final border on my double 9-patch and betting rid of the V corner in the border and ease it back into the L shape it should have! Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteThank goodness for cotton! It does allow a Squeeze and ease when we need it!
