Table scraps challenge

Remember someone saying they were going to avoid

furry woodland creatures and  get some quilting done?

Well, this huge squirrel popped into my sewing room!

Combined with a necessary evil, (tidying up the block bank),

there are now 9 wheel chair quilt tops in my sewing room!

Who knew piecing orphan blocks together would be sew

addicting!  Probably everyone! My goal for next month

will be to source some zippers for the back pockets and

get them all quilted up!

So on with the top show!

First I pulled down the block bank. It is full and heavy.

Did a little sorting and made a huge mess

but still had room to layout just one.

Have you heard of the potato chip blocks?

This acted the same and

I just couldn't stop.  I used some like colors,

and groups of blocks that seemed to  meld.

Here is number 1:

Then I came across some practice embroidery pieces

I was gifted.

These wheelchair quilts will go off

to long term care facilities as Christmas gifts for

those who would only get staff purchased socks.

Each quilt will have a secret block on the back,

just to make it a little more special.

On with the show!

Yes , I really had a lot of color family

strips in that basket!  I am sure some

of my quilting buddies will recognize a few blocks!

The plainer bottoms will get some grid quilting to

dress them up!  The binding will be a bit

bolder also, to frame and accent some of the

lighter colored blocks.

These should really brighten up the lunchroom and

keep everyone cozy!

Sunday Stash Report

Lots of work going on here this week. Sometimes my

energy level is solar!! The stash report spreadsheet is trembling

with excitement since I am getting ready to quilt up a storm!

Items do not count in the stash report unless they are quilted

and bound but many are getting very close!

A nice pile for quilting!

There are even 10 small tops ready for layering!

Here is the link for that post. A whole wall full of fun!

Piling Them Up!

Well, I am doing it!  Earlier in the month

I made the wild claim that July would be

quilting month. There are actually 3

and almost a 4th, pinned and ready to quilt!

The largest obstacle for me and I am sure for

many is the backing.  The 20 " square plan

is usually good but it does get complicated

when I try to make a pattern happen on the

back of the quilt.  The 20" plan is just

digging into your stash and pulling out

a bunch of fabric to cut into 20" squares

to make up a back.  5 x 5  20" make a lovely

100" square piece that will accommodate

most large back and makes longarmers

happy with lots of extra fabric on all sides.

My BBP ( Bin of Big Pieces) is a great

place to go but I still try to mix and match

to make an interesting back.

The selvage quilt got a nice piece of the

yellow batik. An interesting

set of triangle strips came in the door Wednesday

so the back got a nice accent.

Thank  you DD for the great pieces!

A nice, blue 60" x 80" log cabin got the 20" squares

block with a set up of 3 by 4 but was just too

narrow for good quilting comfort. A few

cut off strips, (it is good to be a saver)

were added to bring it up to good

size and adequate coverage.

The third quilt pinned, got a large piece but

again, it was just too narrow and the block bank was

called into action. Lifting it down from its home

let me know just how full it is getting!

Some extra blocks really spiced up the large print backing.

This morning, I

did concede to using a lovely piece of

wide back but there will be a snazzy label

going on to dress it up a bit.

Off to pin up some more tops and

then get quilting!

Stay safe and sew on!

Crazy Log Cabin, With Black Accent

Completed my goal this month, all crazy log cabins

are squared up to 10 1\2",  101 of them!

Once again my numbers got away from me and

I now have enough blocks

to make 3 twin or 2 queen sized quilts.  Addition of

an interesting border treatment will bring them up to size

so I will most likely go with 3 and donate or gift 2.

I have lots of ideas for border treatment so it should

be a great adventure, wish me luck!

Stash Update- no More Selvages

This month is clicking on by and my stash is going up

and down with the temperatures!

The selvage quilt top is finished but it

doesn't count until it is bound.

A few more scrap bags and donated fabric have

gone out the door, and a few more bits and things

have come in.

It seems that whenever a group of quilters get

together, fabric gets shared!

The lovely quilt starters came home with me!

A baggie of precuts,

some block starters,

and some premade units all

ready to go!

wow do they look great!

Bargain for a finish?!

Well that big ole' squirrel is all sewn up  and the

back is a bargain to boot!!

Here it is!  It is going into the pile to be quilted soon

and may even end up as one of my cozy collection.

It measures 74" x  76" and is heavy for top.

A single batt should be perfect and it will be a

very warm quilt for winter.

It really surprised me since I had assumed

selvages would not have a lot of color.

There ended up to be many greens,

orange/browns,

blues

and reds,

with just a few purple and yellows.

I did not include blacks, browns or pink.  I felt

they would give a different tone to the quilt.

A back of yellow batik will set it off nicely and

the muted color will be beautiful as a binding.

The batik was actually found at a thrift shop!

Many thrifters find treasures in thrift stores

and now I can add my self to the list of lucky shoppers!

This bolt was priced at a stunning $9.50 and contains

8 meters of good quality batik.

I machine bind my quilts so the tough needling of the

batik shouldn't be a problem.

There are only a few stray selvages kicking around the

sewing room so I believe , " my work with selvages is done! "

Stash reporting, wowzer

Very busy week here, lots of movement all around.

Helped a friend destash a neighbor, well make a start on it anyway.

The numbers reflect the huge gift of fabric. This is after a big

split and 2 big donations elsewhere so lots of goodies for all.

It looks like I should start sewing faster!

Here is some of the "in" fabric.

Lots of projects

are moving forward and my OMG will be finished up this week

and maybe even have blocks joined up!

Here is a picture of the teenagers and

their parents in one of our town's many ponds.

Productive spring for them!

Enjoy a very creative week!

Stay safe and sew on.
