Binding , binding ....bound!

It has finally happened, the last of

the RSC string, giant stars have been

bound.  They have been moving around

the house, (with the help of my little GS)

the past two weeks. One is destined for my Cozy

Collection and the other as a Wedding gift

for a yet to be announced nuptial.

First the quilts came home to the living room,

then they were used as pillows,

then they moved to entry to welcome family,

then they got a little family of their own!

Here is a picture of the local transporter.

moved them down to the workroom for binding.

They needed some great colors for the bindings.

The  local long arm business

did the quilting with two different star patterns.

Star quilting 1

This one will be in my cozy collection

since it has a double batt.

Star quilting 2

So here is the quilt show!

The difference between these two is the placement of

the colors and the borders!

It was a great day for an outside photo with

temperatures in the high twenties.

Displayed here for a nice memorable photo session.

A few inside pictures too!

And another double picture outside!

Why not feature a few of the stars!

Lots of fun to do and even more fun to enjoy.

Happy stitching all around. Stay safe and sew on !

A Perfect Day

Well, no change in my quantities in or out

but I am making some

 progress toward completion!

2023 STASH TOTALS

  Used last week:     0 m

Used year to date:       29  m

                                      Scraps out               0 m

Year to date:            52 m bolt 27m, bucket batiks 15m

Net added in 2023          27.5 meter

The two big star quilts have moved to

the workroom. Tonight I am digging

out fabric and strips for the single batted RSC star.

I would say pull but my stuff is under

other stuff so it is more like a dig.

Trimming it up and getting a nice binding should

be a good evening's work.

I was considering beige binding but

a multicolored scrap edging will be the best.

After dinner, my  DH and I were just reviewing our perfect day.

A bit of garden work,

some nice banter about house stuff,

rehashing a camping visit with the off spring,

an afternoon reading. All this after a nice

lazy lie in this morning.  Oh and some golf ball hitting and

a great walk too!  All in all a near perfect day.

Managing to stitch every day so far this month

has been fantastic.  It really moves a lot of

projects forward with just a little bit of time

each day!

Stay safe and sew on!

Eensy , weensy, what is that?

Have you ever discovered hidden treasure in your sewing room?

I was stitching up some Terri Rowland squares

and when I went searching for more parts,

a bag of graduated strips turned up !

Then I found a pattern!

 A scrap spider's web from 2017!

Can it qualify as a UFO to finish? It looks like fun and

I even left a clue for myself to use solids for the kite shape!

These will be done up without a foundation. The pattern will be use

to check the scrap strips for size and a durable template of plastic or

tag board will be made up to trim it out to size. I do have a MSQ

template that will be used to cut out the kite/center shape.

This way avoids having

to tear off paper or sewing onto a foundation fabric.

There are no teenagers around to do it anymore,

we all enjoyed making a mess together, removing

the backing.

Bonus for me, it seems I've already sewn

up a stack of pieces for the web portions.

The top is already in progress!  This project will use a little bit

of my solid pile too. Win, win all the way around!

Looking back, I have done a few spiderweb quilts already!

Here is one from 7 years ago!

How time flies when you're stitching.

Back to Stripping!

Once again I am going back to a UFO but

this time I am making more progress.  Sewing

with friends certainly helps!

There is always something on to listen to, and

last night I helped the Enterprise crew deal with

some nasty aliens.

These crazy patch log cabins have

been kicking around my sewing area

for some time. I am excited to work on

them but other UFOs  kept calling.

A good browse thru the UFO corner

and my treasure hunting was satisfied.

I can dig out the scrap strips for this

black accented beauty. We all collect

the cut-offs and edges of trimmed items.

These make great pieces for this quilt.

This partial block even got incorporated,

it looks great!

I started out with a pile of these from

a previous sewing evening.

I've kept moving the boxes all over the workroom!

I added a strip of black to each side using up

some assorted strips of black.  The shades do

seem to vary a bit, but I am okay with it.

Next up, I sorted out my cut offs, ( I have a lot more than shown)

and added a round to the blocks. I had to call on another box of

little bits saved for scrappy boarders to get more parts

but scraps are never a scarce item in my workspace!

Once again, there seem

to be a lot more starter blocks than needed so there

will be another  family set in the making.

I've only been working on enough for one top.

Now I have a nice pile going but will need to

finish them off and add a 4 or 5 inch strip of black.

This is a good place

to start using the lovely bolt of black my walking

partner sourced for me.

Trimmed to size the

blocks will be ready for a striped sashing.

There's is still a lot of stitching to do so

Stay safe and sew on !

To do again!

My list from last week got a bit adjusted and

 here is my list:

~ Assemble 2 green log cabin tops Done

~Make a baby quilt out of the leftovers Done

~Trim out the work box of orange scraps Abandoned

               ~ Make up 2 - 5x5 blocks: 1 orange 1 green To do

~ Plant the last pumpkins in the big tub Done!

My list for this week will be:

 ~ Make up 2 - 5x5 blocks: 1 orange 1 green To do

~Work on scrap black framed log cabins To do

~Start Binding 2 string star quilts To do

It is a short list but more than enough to keep me busy .

Here is my wealth of green log cabins added to

the vault. They were so fun to do, can't wait till

the quilting frenzy hits me!

It was getting a little sparse!  I had forgotten about

sizing up batting for these three tops. There are still are a
total  13 of quilts to be done !

I did manage to stitch up about a zillion

Terri Rowland 3 1/2" blocks, (actually about 120).

They very addictive and even made a dent

in last week's  gifted scrap box!

I am going to sneak in a little stash report

here. I just realized tomorrow is Tuesday.

I lucked into a great find of backing or piecing

fabric for $1.30m so my fabric in went up but

very economically!

The early part of the week was full of block party,

kid's day and quilt meetings

This week is flying by and summer is so

nice here. The backyard is blooming

and I had a great time shifting my

perennials around.  They don't seem

to mind when I shift them so I

attack my yard with my favorite tool often.

It is a long handle, 1/2 sized spade.

It is a repurposed sampling tool

my DH used during his field service

hazardous waste testing days. It is

so perfect for getting lots of oomph

into a spadeful of soil!

More quilty things tomorrow with

my BFF coming in for a year end dinner,

and meals with friends!

Stay safe and sew on !

Clean and Designing

 Wow, sometimes inspiration just hits.

I got very tired of my too small and oh so

thready design wall and needed to replace it.

While putting fresh towels in the bathroom, I

stumbled across a comforter bag containing

the last of a bolt of too stiff and too narrow

needle punch batting.  Purchased from a

store closing clearance, it was supposed to

be a double width cotton but turned out to

be  a narrow compact craft bat.  I used it

for everything but quilting.  Some was gifted

for fabric bowls, some used as mattress covers,

table matts and even some window insulation

during a cold snap.

There was just enough left to almost cover

a larger space for a design wall. It will get

a bit more tacky as it is used but for now it

is clean and tidy and a few well placed pins

hold the blocks up nicely. Pinned in place

with some unused lady bug pins it looks wonderfully

white. Ta da! So beautiful and crisp!

I will use my smaller gridded design sheet to start

planning my Gypsy quilt made of orphan blocks.

The first quilts have gone up on the new design wall

and the blocks are now up in the

summer sewing room for assembly.

All pinned and ready to stitch !

The was not quite a Marie Kondo rid out but

definitely a repurpose save!

Stay safe and tidy!

A Blue Twin Granny

This lovely twin quilt was made following the instructions from

MSQ.  The first step is making a pile of colored 16 patches.

Cutting them diagonally and then sewing the quarters

together yields an on-point style

block quickly and easily with out triangle corners or set ins.

Two of these were made up during a wild sewing

zoom retreat last winter. One each in blue and yellow.

The blue top was pinned and next in line for quilting.

The binding was even ready!! Who said quilting fairies never visit!

Actually, I like to make binding, and had done four

quilts worth one day!

Never following my own advice of  "make it easy", I chose a

quilting design with lots of starts and stops.

My cutting button got a real workout!

Then long serpentine stitch on the sashing finished it up nicely.

A soft flannel back in blue strips makes this very cuddly.

I put in a 5 0z high loft batt, but experience has taught me that it will

collapse after half a dozen washings,

so I put in a 80/20 Hobbs to give it

structure after the poly compacts.

The variety of blue fabrics really make it fun

to browse!

A scrappy blue binding for the granny and it is complete

and ready for labeling when it gets called to be loved.

It may have found a permanent home in the blue wing chair!

Stay safe and sew on!
