Blue , blue 2022 oops 2023!

 Well, we are back into blue!!!

This is my third rainbow scrap challenge year.

Doing things differently, I actually have a list

of blocks/projects to do for RSC. 

Usually I just punt and hope for the best. 

Starting this year with wonky stars. 

 The backgrounds will be colors 

instead of always white.  These can 

be used together with the white star 

squares to add more variety to the quilts.

 I finished up the stars with a nice stack of sixteen to put 

into the parts department. 

While looking for more white scraps, lots of  strips

showed up!

Three, yes three  wonky log cabin tops were

finished up during the week's sewing! I started 

sewing the blocks New Year's day.

They are measuring (56 x 80)

so they can easily be  a family quilt when upsized by 

adding one more row. I certainly have more strips!

 Stitching up a 

matching baby quilt to keep on hand would be fun. 

A blue and pink wonky log cabin should be adorable!!

I am trying to work through my RSC list.  

A lot of small little pieces showed up during the 

bin sort, (I was looking for white pieces to use in the stars.)

This morning, I will sewing up all those bits to prep

fiddlesticks for next month's RSC. Here is this 

month's offering and they were great fun to do!!

Next up on the RSC journey is the scrap Irish chain.

 

I don't have a pattern so a little drafting/doodling is in order.

Friday Night with Friends

 It was a great Friday night.

I came across a wonky log 

cabin on a Pinterest post and 

surfed over to Bonnie Hunter's site. 

Knowing the non measuring aspect would 

make it quick, stitched up a few. 

Friday I decided to spend the evening with some 

very funny Canadian humor  and 

stitched all the log cabin blocks in rows. 

By the end of the night, I had this!

Enough rows here for two twin sized tops!

Oddly enough, I still had this!

I seem to have an incredible Buddha bin of scraps that just refills as

 

I use them up! I am sure all scrap quilters can identify with that!

There were a few too many wide orange strips 

 

in the blocks so I did a little "editing" 

and covered half the width with blue strips.

So today I am sewing up the rows and hanging

the flimsies in vault!   

It was definitely fun to spend the night sewing.

 

The show I listened to was called, " The Red Green Show", 

very funny silly stuff. During one segment on tall tales, 

a very classic Canadian actor playing Hap Shaughneesy (Gordon

 Pinsent) told a yarn about drilling for gunpowder!

Stash reporting!

 My oh my oh my!  

I completely fell down on my stash reporting. 

I can say however that I finished the year in the

negative for fabric added. Only one large purchase 

of 7 m of white in October. 1 Halloween panel and 

a meter of matching fabric finished out my fabric buying. 

Donation of 6 quilts to the Zebra charity and 

6 large quilts out the door have me finishing way in the 

"more out than in!"

My last update was in October:

2022 STASH TOTALS

Used last week:           1.6 M

Used year to date:     22. M

Added last week:          39. M

Added year to date:      70.5 M

Net added in 2022      49. yards

   I got inspired to visit my flimsy vault and 

managed to get a lot of finishing done near the 

end of 2022. The quilts out  add up like this:

baby/crib size 6 @ 3m each = 18 m 

twins 2 @ 6m each = 12

queens 4 @ 11m each =44

for a grand total of 85m out for a net fabric out of 

36m!  I will call that a win!

This year, I am setting up a spread sheet for tracking projects.

The scraps however, are presenting a problem. Do I quantify them

as bins, bags, piles, mountains or kilos? That is still 

up for review, but I must have some way to track the scrap horde. 

 I already have 1 packet of scraps in from a friend and it is

 only day 4 of the new year!!

I am doing up my ufo list and adding  tasks  columns 

so I can see project status quickly. I have two different UFO 

groups to join so at least of few of the UFOs should get completed!

My rules for using up fabric are simple, it is not done 

until the binding is on. That discounts all the flimsies in 

the vault.  That certainly makes me strive to get the bindings done!

Some quilters track thread use by the number of bobbins used so

I may add that metric too.  A pleasant time was had last evening

winding a wealth of bobbins with neutral colors for piecing. 

One of my groups meets at an antique mall. This little item

holds 6 small spools and has a pincushion in the middle. 

It doesn't count as new thread since it is for display only . 

Isn't it adorable!

All this tracking should keep me up to date on 

fabric and most thread used. 

As long as someone doesn't mention "patterns"!

January Goals

 Happy New Year to all!

I came across a wonky log

That led me to the block bank where there is a pile of 

partially complete log cabins stacked up.  

There may be even one more project box of

blocks that

would keep my machine humming!

RSC 2023 !! Goals for the year too!

 First day of the year and I am busily 

trying to organize myself so I can make 

the best use of my sewing time. I do find

I stall a bit when I'd love to be sewing but

can't decide what to work on!! 

I save patterns as I see them throughout the 

year and that is where I am going to find 

some new ideas for 2023. 

First up, I found some fiddlesticks over at Kat & Cat quilts.

They focus on charity quilts for their state but they freely 

share great ideas and patterns.  The wind up page has a multitude of 

variations on this scrap burning pattern so 

they are definitely on my list. 

Then I zipped over to Making a Lather and found some

 end of the rainbow blocks that will suit my scrap addiction 

and the RSC perfectly.  This pattern

will also make use of my neutral and 

low volume bin so it is a win win! 

Everyone loves an Irish Chain don't they?!  

I am probably going to use some of my favorites this coming year.

 The wonky star blocks numbers increased dramatically one cold

 weekend. Experimenting with different layouts and color 

placement could start a whole new adventure!

There is still a hunt for a coin or quickie strip 

variation to use each RSC month to clear off the sewing table. 

I will fall back to my weave ( my name for it) block , even

tho my mother always said," White gets dirty so easily. " 

 It can be found at Grace and Peace quilting as well 

as where I found it years ago, in a Leisure Arts book. 

Low volume and whites/beige can be used for

 backgrounds on this one too, so I can 

work with that bin too! I could do the scalloped edge again too!

Another quilt added to the list is by 

Marjorie Rhine featured in American Quilter July 2020.

It is made of scrap strips also so I can prepare

 scrap string sets for two quilts at once!

Crumb blocks are already on my list 

and there are some new layouts and sashing ideas 

over at Quilts in the Hood.  An occasional poster

 but definitely a winner with this setting idea!

Going thru my project to do dream list,

 I found the garlic knot that was discovered over on

Sew Preeti Quilts. Using solids I was gifted and 

my low volume bin makes that definitely

 good for both scrap busting and RSC.

That looks like almost a list, 

but there are so many patterns and so little time! 

Just looking thru some old emails and 

found a trip around the world that would be fun for 

RSC too.  Stop me now!

Tis the season!

 Kids are off work, cards are sent, and 

the holidays have begun!  I got a bit 

excited about a free pattern and ended 

up printing it off on decorative holiday paper!

So pretty and I do need to start another project!

Just wanted to show this gorgeous quilted card I got 

from a friend. 

She got started and couldn't stop

at just one!  

Wrapping everything up is always fun time 

Just a little finishing tomorrow. 

Still a great time to do a little stitching and plan for next

years projects, link parties and sew-a-longs!

Finished a few more of these little scrap blocks. 

Also got a few of these stop and go blocks done up. 

I always want to just sew up the whole quilt!

Ongoing projects that are calling me:

1) many strings from the APAQ needs a border

2) softer yellow granny squares needs another 

row

3) 2 tops need layering but first need backs

(the red postage stamp and the

family block quilt)

4) 2 RSC color strings need borders

and backs

Lots to do!

Dirty Dozen update

 Wow, what happened to 2022?  

Remember back in July when I said I was doing 

the Dirty Dozen Challenge over at Country Threads?

Well here is an update of my progress.  Seems like 

I don't play well with others because I went off the 

grid and quilted what I wanted done and didn't 

exactly follow the list!

So let's see how I am doing at halfway thru!

July was #10 

Coin Some Pink is completed and shipped off. 

August was #3 

Sadly this red postage stamp is still a flimsy. 

September pulled an #11

Twinkle Blue and Yellow are both quilted. The Blue

Twinkle I will keep in reserve for family babies

 and the Yellow Twinkle is donated. 

October is #5

Two more, Twinkle Pink and Orange

are done up. Pink will stay in reserve and 

Orange has been donated. 

November is #11. 

Yay, today at a guild sew day, 

I actually got the last of the big 

strings for the kids Christmas gifts bound!

Now just to de-thread and label and they 

are ready for gifting!

To bring me current, December is #12. 

Today, after the big strings were bound, 

I had enough scrappy binding leftover

to bind Postage Sixteen. 

So, wow!  When I lay it all out, it looks like a lot. 

My quilt vault is looking a little empty, but 

always more to do!
