UFOs Away!

 We love UFO days!

Lots to do and a set aside time to get it done is always fun!

First up, the blocks for the final weave top were ready to stitch.

These have a white background that really

 makes the colors pop.

The top is complete!

Then the posy blocks were next to be opened up.

This little found/gifted project took up a lot more 

time than I'd planned.

It needed 17 additional stars to fill in the alternate spots. 

They are very fun to make and 

use up some scraps too, bonus!

Two sides of half the posy blocks had 

to be removed to make row joining easier.

That done,  the rows were stitched up and 

set aside awaiting decisions.  

Do I piece together the lattice bits, 

or find a fabric to match and cut new?

White background stars may be side borders to 

make a twin sized width. They have been 

waiting patiently for a purpose. 

A pinning day for the tops in waiting will have to 

keep waiting since the Discovery table has 

more tops to be unearthed!  It's is archeaeology February I think!

Lara Croft may be playing later in the workroom theatre!

Sew Steady !

 The Table of Discovery is certainly looking better.

 All the finding has allowed me to

 keep stitching all week, 7 out of 7 days.

 That keeps my percentage at 100% for the year.

 My stash usage has also gotten a big hit because I have a finish.

My first completion allows me to take 

7 meters out of the  stash  total, so no change in numbers. 

This brings me to 7 meters of usage so far, with none coming in.

Here are the gleanings from the Table of Bits so far.

First, the weave/hatchet block has yielded this top.

The background fabric here is a lovely pale gray.

 These blocks are 7.5" cut and made from pieces

 that were found  in the stash room. 

Next was the last of the 8s & 10s,

It came together quickly with the use of some

pre-existing strips set from the Discovery Table.

The last from the Saturday sewing is this 

lovely Christmas top.

It started off with a blue accent border, 

but the Saturday sewers' consensus was it just didn't work.

It was swapped out for a dark green, and voilà, the top is complete.

I also pulled a stack of 12x12 Christmas blocks, 

and they will be put together to make 

a nice surprise back for the string quilt.

There are a few more units to be joined. 

The white hatchet block are ready for assembly.

A string block with four lovely 

gray accent blocks is ready to join together.

Some older quild swap blocks are the

next up on the design wall.

There are some lovely beige pieced borders

 already made that will be used up to 

complete these next two tops.

Planning Ahead? What does that mean!

 Wow, if the end of the year is time 

for reflection, the beginning seems like time 

for planning and motivation!  

I'm going to do both in the name of  efficiency! 

Trying to get my UFO list in order is a challenge!  

I keep getting distracted by 

projects to work on, lunches to have and patterns to explore.

I do have a few rules for myself for my finishes and progress. 

A project is not finished until the binding is on!  That means

the fabric quantity used can't be counted if it is just a flimsy!

That motivates me a bit. I count a queen sized and 11m, 

twin as 6m and crib/baby size as 3. Still not sure how to count 

scrap supply; bag, tub, bin, mountain?  I am sure a way to add 

them all up will present itself. 

This past year has seen my stash turn over but my 

scrap supply is still generous!

Many of the scraps I receive are already in 

great usable sizes. Planning for the next 

RSC and the projects I'd love to do has 

been fun and productive!

Here are my current ideas!  Like any plan, 

it comes with a disclaimer!  These items 

are subject to change or not!!

The bin for 2023 still has a few items

to finish up or combine so that will be 

at the top of the list. They may be 

combined with the 2025 focus , which is 

strings and strips!

My cup runneth over with both so 

I have plenty of supply!

One quick trip thru my strip

binder and a nice evening scrolling, 

and my string project list is building. 

I found some of my old projects, 

and would like to do a variation of 

the string stars border, using string

made 1/2 squares to make classic

designs.

A 1/2 square with light and dark 

halves could produce all sorts of 

great designs.  Straight furrows, 

streak of lighting  etc. 

I want to so some variations of this

blast from the past, (2022) and 

use all strips with color families being the 

design maker. 

This circular design by Melody Crust has 

always caught my eye .  A bit intimidating 

with all the circles but , I can do it! 

It will be so much fun to make the colorful circles, 

imagine the variety and different placement possibilities!

It was published in 2002 but is sure to be a classic. 

I can't wait to see what wonderful 

ideas the cyberverse of quilters will come up with next year!!

So Scrappy !

Ah Vacation!

 Well, did anyone notice my absence?  If not surprise! I was away!

If you did, surprise, I'm back! 

We had a wonderful time in the far south, Florida!

It was beautiful, warm and we had family to visit.

The wildlife was wonderful and plentiful. 

We saw, manatees, tidal coons, turtles, rays, 

alligators, crocodiles, herons, storks, ibis,

spoonbills (they were beautifully pink),

cranes, sandpipers (all sorts), large leaf mantis,

and to cap it all off, a rocket launch!

We returned to host our GK for a few days.

After surviving some wild dance parties, 

there was a small quilt problem. 

The resident aging dog got a bit 

anxious and ate a hole in 

a  cuddle quilt!

 I can add a repair task to getting caught up 

on my quilting projects!

Looks like a lot of sewing is in my future!

The Reason I Have UFOs

 I have had an epiphany !!!

In working thru my UFOs , I have discovered something startling. 

Many of my UFOs have issues.  

I thought most of my UFO s were the 

result of DSD ( Dreaded Squirrel Distractions) or 

FASPS ( Found a shiny penny  syndrome) . 

I was hoping some of them just needed a binding, or

maybe an extra block.  Unfortunately, many of mine have serious 

difficulties and need some heavy duty quilty solutions.  

This is what I have discovered so far and 

some of the solutions planned for them. 

The Curved Log cabin- has narrow seams and 

some pulled apart. This one I had tightly quilted 

and will  topstitch the open seams. It is all bound and we use and

 display it, with the pins still marking the areas needing work! 

True confessions, we  often slept under Big Red 

when it was half stitched and had pins holding the 

batting in place around the edges. 

The Stretched stars 

The base block was not a standard size, 

so additional charm blocks had to be cut 

        down to make more rows. A top was unearthed during an

organizing spree, but I have many blocks left of 2 sizes so 

now they are another ufo. 

The Square Dance - The on point setting created gaps in edges.

This was one of my first attempts using quilter's fuse on a 

large, on point project. 

  I am adding a sashing and it will be " a softer square dance"

with no sharp corners as I have to sew 

over the edges of the outside squares to add the sashing. 

Curved nine patch- Discovered an easier way 

to get the same effect with less work. ( Thank you 

Jenny Doan)  This is not an issue, more of a disenchantment. 

I will combine these with some other blocks to 

make a complete top. 

That is the plan so far.  

My UFOs and Gifted Goodies live 

in a basket on a shelf.  It would be 

very nice to clear it out a bit this year.

The Log Cabin for This Year

The rainbow log cabin challenge has been a 

great way to keep me inspired and working on my

scrap pile.  Last year I managed to make a nice stack

of multicolored log cabins to use, gift and donate. 

This year's search for a similar project is 

proving difficult. It has to be a nice looking 

project without a lot of complex pieces. 

I would also like a pattern I want to do. 

The Stash Buster challenge over at 

Border Creek Station  is a triple Irish chain so I am 

doing it for one of my monthly RSC blocks.

There are many variations of string 

quilt blocks so I many stitch up a bunch of 

those each month. They would use 

lots of strings and that is a very good thing.

The string strips are really piling up!

There are  a number of RSC projects from last 

year to finish up too. The garlic knots got pushed aside, 

so that project is back on the RSC list for 2024.

The fiddle stixs blocks got a very slow start,

so I am going to stick it right into the waffle blocks

scrap project that I am using for a RSC project.

One of my all time favorites, the little wonky stars 

is an ongoing block.  Crumb blocks and crumb strips

are also on the nice easy sewing list that I can do 

anytime I just want to stitch and not worry about a pattern.

They both make great additions to finish off 

crumb quilt blocks or enlarge a block pattern. 

There certainly seems to be enough to keep me sewing!
