This week I am participating in something
completely different, a strip block race!
Never having sewn for speed,
I am not sure what to expect!
I'm sewing on a featherweight so
it is pretty speedy.
All oiled and ready to go!
We're to prepare our strips any
way we like so I am setting mine
up like I do when I sew them at home.
The finished block size is 10" cut.
I do have some design boards I use
to set up my scrap blocks.
My BB made them for me.
They work wonderfully for laying
out all kinds and of blocks.
The blocks for "race" will be
10" cut so I will precut some
strips to make the correct size.
After a few trials, here is what I've
come up with!
The blocks for the race need to be
made with strips/strings 2" wide or
less. The corners can be triangles
cut form 4" or 5" squares.
Soo..
I cut a bunch of 10" papers,
gave them a diagonal fold to
keep me straight,
Then I organized them into piles
that matched my sewing order
and I am ready! I have these convenient
totes for them too!
My practice one worked okay and
I think I can make about 20 in the
2 hour time limit! It should be fun!
moving right along. All the diamonds
have their sides. Eventually,
after 3 tries at cutting side triangles,
I ended up paper piecing the finishing
sides. Even though I'm not fond of
paper piecing, it sure makes precise
corners and seam allowances!
Good luck with the string race! I like the brown diamonds a lot.
ReplyDeleteIt is really becoming fun, I have no idea what it will look like . The race was great fun!
DeleteI love how you explain your process for making each type of block. I've never heard of the strip block race but it sounds fun. The sew along blocks look complicated but also very nice. I love sewing on my featherweight and old 99. They are so consistent!
ReplyDeleteThank you ! My featherweight is lovely. I will break out the Bernina this weekend to stitch up a few charity quilts but I always go to my featherweight for piecing!
DeleteThat race sure sounds fun. You are well organized so you should do well. Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss.

It sure will be ! Hope it isn't stressful tho, just fun!
DeleteString challenge sounds like so much fun! I've never sewn them onto paper, but then again, I always do my string quilts as quilt as you go.
ReplyDeleteI rarely saw on paper, but I think it will increase my trimming speed. It really will just be a fun time I think.
DeleteRACE sewing?! It sounds terrifying to me! I’d sew over a fingernail and end up in the ER for sure. Hope you have a great time and no one bleeds all over their fabric!
ReplyDeleteI'm so over my left index finger a few times. I always panic and pull the needle out too hard. My actions seem to cause more damage than the machine. Let's all stay safe and sew on.
DeleteHi Deb, you did a lot of prep work. Good luck with the race! Thanks for linking up to FM Mavericks.
ReplyDeleteIt should be a great time!
DeleteYou've been busy, stitching and racing along!
ReplyDeleteWe have even been camping three days with Familiy!
DeleteA strip race sounds like fun. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteIt was ! I made a few boo boos so I just ripped the partial block off the paper and zoomed on !
DeleteThe strip block race sounds fun, and you are so well prepared, it's going to be a fabulous experience! The QAL is moving along nicely, love the new blocks. Thank you for sharing and go go go for the race ;)
ReplyDeleteI did and I won! The QAL is looking good too!
DeleteI've done a jelly roll race quilt. It was fun. That's the only time I have sewn for speed--unless it's a last minute repair before the kid goes to school.
ReplyDeleteYour QAL pieces are just too lovely! I’m not sure which I like best but those diamonds are sure grabbing my attention. Hope you had fun at your race. Thanks for joining ToDo Tuesday again! 😁
