End of The Stack Log Cabin

Remember all those Log Cabin tops from 2 years ago now?

Well here is the last one.

I had combined all my all my log cabin blocks into one pile.

I thought I could make two quilt tops out of them.

Revaluating, it turns out I really only have enough blocks

to make one small quilt.

However, I never really listen to

what the blocks tell me so

I'm going to turn it into a larger quilt

by trying to design a border. So here we go!

Now it's on the design wall,

so I'm getting getting ready to sew up blocks

to finish this center and increase the size.

There are four blocks that look like

 they have a corner arrangement.

Those will be moved out to be corners of the bigger quilt.

Here are all the centers for the additional blocks I'll need.

I'm still using the polka dot centers.

Every time I see a polka dot fabric,

I cut out some centers!  Needless to say,

I have a lot of centers.

There may be more polka dot-centered

Log Cabin quilts in my future!

For now I'm finishing up this Log Cabin.

The center squares are all done.

This is the lovely bag of scraps

I'm using to make the edging squares.

Thank you LT!

I wanted an edge looking border so I followed

the court house step pattern,

but used some careful color placement.

One good evening of stitching should

got them done!

The voids are filled and the border looks

like a winning plan.

All pinned to the design wall and

needing a bit of movement. There are a few colors

here that could use better friends!

A  New Year's sew along popped up so I was able to finish

the edging square and stitch up the top.

Can anyone see the small revolution

starting near the bottom?

Here is the finished top with a few repositioned blocks.

The border was quite successful.

The four corner blocks worked perfectly,

so that makes it even better!

Only 2  blocks left to decorate the back .

Now to move on to pinning!

It should be a great way to finish out 2024 leftovers!

Stay safe and sew on!

Finding Things to Finish Up

We're in the final countdown to 2025

and it is a great time to finish things up.

There was a lovely pile of left over blocks,

waiting in the wings for a solution.

They are coming together into totally

new creations.

The first is a whole sheaf of RSC

/Stashbuster blocks and squares left

over from the year of Irish Chains.

There was even one half of an intended

queen size green quilt in the stack.

I measured and fiddled and sketched and

erased and came up with a plan.

First, I finished up the center,

then debated colors for an inner border.

Settling on black was the easy way out,

but as the end result shows, a wise choice.

Then I sorted out the sides and sewed a few.

There was a bit of easing and squeezing going

on as the inner border threw all the figures out

of wack but it all worth it in the end.

Ta da!

Now there are only a few left over blocks,

and those will find a place on the back.

Next up: left over log cabin blocks!

Good luck with all your year end finishes!

Stay safe and sew on !

Year End Tally

Since the finishes are piling up ,

it is time to review my tallies!

I only keep track of fabric bought,

fabric out and the recent scrap influx.

If I rid out, donate or pass on some scraps,

they are in the mix too!

So here we go!

Fabric Purchased: 8  m

Used since last report  6 twin quilts  30 m !

Fabric In to date: 25.5 m

Use to date 2024 : 96

Scraps in : 20 m

Scraps out : 0 m

Big Batch donation : 60 m (June) 70 ( Oct)

Net Fabric in YTD:  48 m

The Irish chains made a big dent in the total.

The last chain bound was this multicolored

charmer with a scrappy binding.

The last remaining chain for a while is this color

block top that is waiting to be layered.

Lots of festivities are planned for the end of the year,

so there wont be a lot of finishing going on.

There is even a New Year's Eve zoom party planned!!

Here is to wishing all

a Merry Christmas, Happy Holiday

and a warm and wonderful time with family!

Divide and Quilt

The second Irish chain quilt has hit the sewing table.

The first was the orange one with the interesting binding.

Only six more chains to quilt up, yikes!

Also, there are  two or three full sized tops

 hiding amongst the chains.

The major decision when the layering is done,

is always a tough one for me. What to quilt?

Where to quilt? What colour to use?

 I really have difficulty deciding.

This time I just matched the backing

color with a beige-greenie thread.

The front will be using up all my small spools of yellow to

stitch vertical lines up and down the quilt.

It certainly makes you aware of where your seams don't line up!

The goal is not to stitch into the ditch

but to stitch very close to the edge of the ditch.

This task is always difficult for me because I can never choose

how much quilting to put on the quilt!

Always needing options, I leave the decision open ended

and divide the number of rows

by how much quilting I want to start with.

This top ended up with quilting stitches every three rows,

Unfortunately, when I decided to increase

the number of rows stitched, there was no even number.

I ended up stitching every vertical row of the pattern.

It was fun and I think it looks great as it complements the design.

I have emptied three spools of thread too, so, bonus!

When the quilting is all finished up, I will roust out

dazzling yellow for binding and put it all in a pile.

There is one more legacy top to quilt up .

This pale green, lap sized top will get a zigzag treatment,

to emphasize the zigzags on either end of the design.

Good practice for the new machine operator too!

A matching red print binding should enhance the red in the fabric.

The binding will be made and added to the finishing pile.

These will get bound up one evening before the

next pinning frenzy begins.

If the work tables are empty,

I like to pin a batch and spend a few days happily quilting away.

My new machine really gets humming.

Enjoy a great week of quilting!

Stay safe and sew on!

Another Successful Retreat

 Retreat weekend is over and

it is  now time to unpack and review!

One item that got finished up at the very

beginning of retreat,

is the flannel teddy bear.

This poor bear has been hanging

around my sewing room for quite a few years.

I managed to cut out more pieces for his head,

so it  is all together and now it actually looks like a bear!

A little bit of finishing, stitching on some eyes,

clipping the extended seams all

around to make him fuzz nicely,

and it should be ready for gifting.

Then I finished up the curved nine patch.

This UFO had been languishing in my

sewing room for some time.

I was avoiding it since I didn't want to make additional blocks,

but I didn't know how to finish it up!

The center was stitched up at the last retreat,

and this weekend gave me a good chance to organize,

and randomize some postage stamp squares into a complete border.

The colour family postage stamp blocks

around the outside were quite large.

They were divided into smaller units to

decrease the impact of the colour blocks.

I had to add a few rows here and there

to make the corners line up,

but I am quite pleased with the result!

This quilt doesn't have a designated home yet but I'm hopeful

whoever receives it will enjoy the bountiful colours

and curves of the nine patches.

Remember all those twosies

left over from the Stash Buster Challenge?

I spent a very enjoyable evening stitching

them all up into another Irish chain quilt.

This could be the last one, but it is doubtful.

I really enjoyed stitching this up.

Another retreat attendee displayed

 a spectacular Irish chain quilt

completely from solids.

That may be the next quilt on the sewing table!

Last stop for the weekend,

was a bucket of Halloween Fabrics.

The pieces went together quite rapidly,

using the quick cut and piecing method I learned years ago.

The searchable name for this block is

shaded four patch. The quick method makes it  fun to do.

On the last day of fun and games with my quilting friends,

I put together enough to see the pattern develop.

Look at the adorable Halloween characters

peeking out that appeared when I placed

them together on the design wall.

Yo Yo Binder!!

Great fun at a guild picnic including funny names for all.

I was called Yo Yo Binder for the evening!

Our guild is 45 years old and still going strong so that's

very affirmative and delightful. We had some technophilic

members at the helm when the virus hit and the

zoom meetings and bee groups really kept us all

going. We all appreciate our guilds don't we!!

Anywho,  this week was productive in finishes

but not a lot of beginnings.  Two, yes two more

log cabins were finished up. One was quilted and

bound and the other just needed the multicolored

binding to make it complete.

The red one is a honey and there is just something

about a 2 color quilt that warms my color center.

The sun cooperated and provided

lots of good lighting for lawn pictures.

Quilts always look wonderful with natural items

behind them.

We even gave the red quilt a test run in yard this weekend while

enjoying temperatures in the 30s (celcius) with family.

The second finish up  also turned out very well.

This multicolored quilt got a scrappy binding.

There are possibly more of these in my future

as it is a real scrap buster.

They are both large twin sized.

Everything came from the stash, so great

for the numbers!!

Fabric Purchased: 0 m

Used since last report  39 m

Fabric In to date: 25.5 m

Use to date 2024 : 69 m

Scraps in : 0 m

Scraps out : 0 m

Big Batch donation : 60 m (June)

Net Fabric in YTD:  -9 m

That is lovely site to see!

Only one more log cabin to complete!

Backing is in the works for some

Irish Chains so there may be some

late night pinning!

Have a great week !

Stay safe and sew on!

Stash Update!

Well , I tried but I just didn't get to it!

Here is a picture of the little distraction

that kept me from doing up a binding and change in

my stash report!

Adorable and wonderful.

Anywho, no changes in the number this week but lots

of fun in the quilting room!

Fabric Purchased: 0 m

Used since last report  0 m

Fabric In to date: 25.5 m

Use to date 2024 : 30 m

Scraps in : 0 m

Scraps out : 0 m

Big Batch donation : 60 m (June)

Net Fabric In: 40.5 m

Lots of Irish chains came together!

Some crazy log cabins got

their quilting started,

Lots of fun was had!  The GKs made off with

a few spools of thread but I am sure

they will not be missed , (the thread not the GKs!)

I did pull out a few UFOs on my way

to something else and I may try to put

them into the mix!  More fun to be had!

Have a great week and,

stay safe and sew on !
