Do I Have Enough Pins?

The pinned pile is getting bigger!

I have to admit it is a great feeling to

have a nice bunch of layered quilts

waiting for the needle. Now the

challenge will be to choose quilting patterns

Continuous patterns make the process

smoother so I will pull out my two

 favorite reference books to help

in the search.

I like a vine pattern,

but I have to be careful because

they tend to take on a coffee bean shape

toward the end of the top!

A clamshell would be nice on the

two filmstrip edged quilts and the

back and forth of the form will keep the

top moving.

The thousand pyramids will get

a diagonal pattern to emphasize the

beautiful triangle piecing.

The squares might get a diagonal grid

for the center section and a stitch in the ditch

square grid for the colorful border.

Spirals reminiscent of a nautilus shell would

work on the Sea Glass quilt. I didn't

realize I had so many options in mind!

The hopscotch & twin 8s & 10s re good for

an all over design.

Yet another pinned string quilt is hanging on the rack.

There a few pieces left of this style quilt so I'll have to

Have a sewing night to finish it up.

This one might get a different style from the other two quilts.

I'm thinking the Great Big Sea or some gentle ocean waves.

I do love continuous line quilting.

The last on the pinned rack,

is a row by row from a past sewing group.

It will just get some shadow quilting around

each item in the rows  done by the members.

It should be a great memento.

Finally, here is a picture of the quilt rack right now.

It looks amazing and so tidy!

I can't wait to get into the quilting!

Psssttt! What's that?

We all remember the clean out, organize that

came  over us a while ago?

Well one thing that didn't get "sorted"

was a steamer I "left behind -inherited"

when one of the offspring moved lodgings.

It is a Conair clothing steamer!

My BB has recently started

using a small steamer purchased by her husband.

When she waxed enthusiastic about it,

I remembered I had one sitting in the bedroom!

I dragged it out, filled the ample reservoir wit water,

and voila. Great to press large pieces of fabric,

and does fairly well on smaller pieces too, but my iron with the

charging station is more suited to that.

The steamer allowed me to press a quantity of backs.

Now almost all my pins are used up and I can get busy stitching

the half dozen Irish chains I have all layered!

Everything old is new again!

If only that worked for our skin, hair and energy!

Happy stitching.

Divide and Quilt

The second Irish chain quilt has hit the sewing table.

The first was the orange one with the interesting binding.

Only six more chains to quilt up, yikes!

Also, there are  two or three full sized tops

 hiding amongst the chains.

The major decision when the layering is done,

is always a tough one for me. What to quilt?

Where to quilt? What colour to use?

 I really have difficulty deciding.

This time I just matched the backing

color with a beige-greenie thread.

The front will be using up all my small spools of yellow to

stitch vertical lines up and down the quilt.

It certainly makes you aware of where your seams don't line up!

The goal is not to stitch into the ditch

but to stitch very close to the edge of the ditch.

This task is always difficult for me because I can never choose

how much quilting to put on the quilt!

Always needing options, I leave the decision open ended

and divide the number of rows

by how much quilting I want to start with.

This top ended up with quilting stitches every three rows,

Unfortunately, when I decided to increase

the number of rows stitched, there was no even number.

I ended up stitching every vertical row of the pattern.

It was fun and I think it looks great as it complements the design.

I have emptied three spools of thread too, so, bonus!

When the quilting is all finished up, I will roust out

dazzling yellow for binding and put it all in a pile.

There is one more legacy top to quilt up .

This pale green, lap sized top will get a zigzag treatment,

to emphasize the zigzags on either end of the design.

Good practice for the new machine operator too!

A matching red print binding should enhance the red in the fabric.

The binding will be made and added to the finishing pile.

These will get bound up one evening before the

next pinning frenzy begins.

If the work tables are empty,

I like to pin a batch and spend a few days happily quilting away.

My new machine really gets humming.

Enjoy a great week of quilting!

Stay safe and sew on!

Everywhere Inspiration

Still on vacation but there are design ideas everywhere!

No change in stash report but lots of fun is happening.

The heat doesn't seem to slow down my cerebellum so ...

here we go!

First up the beautiful colors of the world around me.

The depth of the water changes the intensity of the

blue. From deep dark indigo to  the almost milky

pale green we often see by our Canadian glaciers.

It is no wonder people of the southern hemisphere

delight in vibrant colors!

The patterns in building material are always

fuel for design ideas.

Tiles,

grates,

windows

  and even non slip flooring,

make me think of Chinese coins,

scrap busting tops and black bordered glass window blocks.

Having exhausted my current environment, I went to relax

and rethink and found some old familiar patterns on

a textured quartet of wall prints.

Leaves,

webs,

and my current favorite , zig zags!

I think a few of these

will definitely be showing up on

my next quilt tops!

Stay safe and sew on !

Here is a gratuitous food picture.
